Some of the most terrifying and disfiguring burns Night Nurse "Anna" has ever seen, were those of patients who had set themselves on fire through the manufacturing of, or use of methamphetamines. Anna states, "Many of the people with the burns had already been disfigured by the use of meth, there eyes are sunken, their bone structure shows through their scabbed faces, and their teeth are broken, leaving only septic holes and jagged shards."

The burns Anna is referring to, come from the large rise in victims that come into the ER with severe third-degree burns. The most notable reason for the rise in burns can be attributed to a new form of "cooking" (manufacturing) meth. Known as "Shake and Bake Meth," this process includes putting all over the raw materials to make methamphetamine into an empty 2-liter bottle, and then shaking the ingredients vigorously.
A spokesperson from New Dawn Recovery states, "This is such a new form of the drug that not a lot is known about it. We do know, however, that this is a dangerous form of the drug, as impurities and raw, caustic, flammable, poisonous ingredients can remain unrefined and carry their own dangers."
Aside from the dangers of ingesting the final product of this method, the method itself is incredibly dangerous. The ingredients combined to make the meth, have to be combined in the exact, specific quatities, otherwise the bottle and entire mixture will explode into a searing-hot ball of flame. The flammable raw materials cling to the skin and continue to fuel the fire like gasoline, slowly cooking and incinerating the flesh off of bone.
The shake and bake process, and its victims, are just another reminder of how terrible methamphetamine is. As if we needed another ghastly reminder of why meth use should be avoided at all costs, here we have a shocking one.
